ALLIED ARMIES FIGHTING HARD IN GREECE
While Withdrawing to Shorter Line VERY HEAVY LOSSES INFLICTED ON GERMANS IN LAND AND AIR CONFLICT (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) - LONDON, April 20. Determined fighting- by Greek and Imperial rearguard troops is delaying the German advance southwards m Greece while other troops continue their withdrawal to a shorter line. Heavy casualties have been inflicted on the enemy. Well-informed quarters in Cairo state that Mount Olympus was evacuated before the Germans took it. The operation was part of the withdrawal to a shorter line of defence, which is now proceeding under heavy aircraft and mechanised attack. The situation is still regarded as serious. In spite of heavy losses, the Germans continue to hurl masses of troops into the battle. The Allied defence line remains intact. The official German news agency states that the Allied forces are withdrawing some 50 to 60 miles to the south. German claims that the Kalabaka Pass and Mount Olympus have been occupied are unconfirmed. . The R.A.F. is playing an important part in beating off constant dive-bombing attacks on the Allied troops. Ten enemy planes have been shot down without loss and others have been damaged.
