FARMERS’ UNION

CARTERTON BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING

COMPLAINTS ABOUT TRANSPORT CHARGES.

HOLDING OF CONFERENCE FAVOURED.

(“Times-Age” Special.)

The annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the Farmers' Union was held yesterday. Mr Austin Reid presided over a fair attendance of members. Those present would have liked to see more members present as many were in town. The membership of the Carterton branch is 166.

Correspondence was received from Dominion headquarters with reference to the meat situation, which was still in a serious position. The secretary, Mr R. H. Williams, Said the local works would take over any early bobby calves, but could only allow skin and vel values.

Transport charges were discussed and complaint was made about the charges recently made by the Licensing Authority, on application, it was stated, from the carriers. As the farmers were having their trucks impressed it was claimed the position would become worse.

The head office advised that from May I. the levy due from provinces would be Us per member.

The Manawatu branch advised that the interprovincial conference would be held towards the end of May. Members present expressed the opinion that the conference should be held as usual, as all other conferences were being held.

The head office pointed out that in future when trucks were impressed for any use only 24 hours were allowed in which to lodge appeals. The secretary reported that the overdraft had now been disposed of and he expected, when the figures were issued at the end of April, there would be a surplus of about £4OO. Two years ago the account was in debit to the extent of £260.

Those present expressed their pleasure at this result, which must be very gratifying after several years of losses.

The chairman reported there had been a combined ball held last year and he was handed £5 as the Union’s profit and he asked what he was to do with this.

It was agreed that it be handed to the women for their Rest Room fund. The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr Austin E. ,Reid; vicechairman, Mr E. T. Bliss; committee, Messrs R. Bassett, E. R. Rose, K. Reid, P. Hodder, F. Wadham, P. Reid, J. P. Petersen, P. Bain, E. Wallen, N. Peacock, G. W. Hart, E. Ordish; delegates to Provincial Executive, Messrs A. E. Reid, A. TINUI BRANCH SHORTAGE OF FARRIERS. RABBIT ASSOCIATION TO CONTINUE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr lan Speedy presided over a large attendance of members on Thursday at the annual meeting of the Tinui branch of the Farmers’ Union. The chairman reported on the various activities during the past year. many matters having been placed on one side on account of war. conditions. Greater interest was now being taken in union matters and the financial position was now assured.

Correspondence was received from the Dominion President with regard to the meat position. Disappointment was expressed at the transport charges in the district. One member said he recently had a load of posts and wire delivered to his farm at Tinui and it had cost him. £8 2s. He did not know the weight. Others complained about the charges on live stock. The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr lan Speedy; vice-chair-man, Mr P. Andrew; committee, Messrs lan Speedy. Jas. Andrew, P. Andrew, L. Meredith; delegates to Provincial Executive, Messrs lan Speedy, Jas. Andrew. P. Andrew; delegate to conference, Mr lan Speedy. The shortage of farriers in the district was mentioned. There was now only one man in the district and it was impossible for him to attend to all the horse shoeing in the district. It was thought there was room for another to set up business in Masterton as the only other one was joining the Forces. It was felt he should not have been taken as he was 'an essential man.

The Independent Mounted Rifles in the Tinui district required about 50 horses shod every six to eight weeks and they did not know how they would get on without a farrier. It was decided to try to arrange for the Government veterinary surgeon to test all dairy and house cows in the district for T.B. as soon as possible. The question of the stock route known as the Black Hill track is to be discussed with the Castlepoint County Council by a deputation from the Farmers’ Union.

At a meeting of the Tinui Rabbit Association held after the annual meeting it was decided by those present to continue with the Tinui Rabbit Association and an endeavour is to be made to procure, the services of a rabbiter at an early date.
