OBITUARY

SIR C. M. LUKE. LONG LIFE OF PUBLIC SERVICE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Obituary: Sir Charles Manley Luke, who gave a long lifetime of service to the city of Wellington, both on local bodies and in church, social and political life. Sir Charles Luke was born at Penzance, Cornwall, in 1857. and arrived in New Zealand in 1874. He was a member of the firm of S. Luke & Son and was one of the managing directors until he retired in 1913. He served almost continuously on the Wellington Hospital Board for 50 years, being chairman for 14 years. He was a member of the Wellington Industrial Association for some years and its chairman 1888-1889, and acted on the executive of several exhibitions. He was Mayor of Wellington in 1895. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Federation with Australia in 1901. On a number of occasions he was president of the Primitive Methodist Conference and later Ist vicepresident of the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1907 to 1914. Sir Charles Luke was for six years president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and served also on the Wellington Harbour Board and on a number of educational and other bodies. He was knighted in 1940.
