GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKETS. FIRM DEMAND FOR POTATOES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 18. The Christchurch market has scarcely settled down since the protracted holiday, but most classes of produce are firm, while for others the autumn demand is practically over. There is no further information about the price to be fixed for oats, but it is understood that when it is fixed it will relate to white oats only. The original announcement related to all oats.
The potato market is firm, but there is no variation in price, which is £7 a ton on trucks. Inquiries have been •received from both Auckland and Wellington for supplies, this being unusually early in the season for this development. There, is a very firm tone about the local market, nothing having occurred to alter previously formed opinions of a short crop. Trade in autumn seeds is practically over, the North Island demand having been supplied. Cocksfoot and white clover are being exported in small quantities, as shipping becomes available. White clover is quoted at Is a lb. for good seed. Red Clover is still coming forward, and good seed is quoted to Is 3d a bushel.
