An Outstanding Performance.

The Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton yesterday attracted a good-class field, and Little Robin was sent out a much better favourite than Iceland Spar. From an excellent start Merry March and King's Toast showed out, but entering the back stretch Wardress had shot to the front, and at the half-mile had a four-lengths lead from Prudent Prince and Wilie Win, with Iceland Spar, Winning Rival, Thermidor, and Little Robin in the rear. Wardress was three lengths in front entering the straight, from Prudent Prince, Happy Ending, Willie Win, Knight Commander, and Iceland Spar, and was still bowling along with a furlong to go. It was not till half a furlong from the post that she was subjected to her first challenge, and this was by Iceland Spar, who gradually worked his way past her, going on to record an outstanding staying performance but with only a neck to spare. Three lengths away Prudent Prince was an easy third, three lengths in front of Little Robin, who came from a long way back. Royal Chief was next, just in front of Happy Ending, The Wrecker, Winning Rival and Thermidor. Outclassed by Density. Two-year-olds were best supported in the Challenge Stakes at the C.J.C meeting yesterday, but they were outclassed by Density, who quickly ran to the front, and at the home turn had a six lengths’ break on Monetary and Palfrey. Monetary went out wide turning into the straight, and though his rider used the whip on him he was done with a furlong from the post and it was lefl to Palfrey to chase the topweight home. He made a game efi’ort, and reduced the gap to three lengths, but, like Density, he was feeling the effects of the fast pace set. Great Northern Hurdles.

The following are the entries for the Great Northern Hurdles, two miles and a half: Dividend, Hessketoon, Clarion Call, Aussie Ra, Tidewaiter. Streamline, All Irish, Esperance Bay, Disturbed, Jewelled Girdle, Gold Spot Clooneen, Limbohm, Saccone, Prival, Erlick, Erination, Donegal, Wharemanea, Baldric, Right Royal, InneSs Lad, High Peer, Aintree, Glen Abb, Hunting Chorus, Selwyn, Rey Lu, Lapidarlan, Race Whip. King Rey, Gaine’s Choice, Black Musk. Master Appellant Rarotonga, Ureklaw, Survoy, Night Hawk.

Great Northern Steeplechase. The entries fox- the Great Northern Steeplechase, about three miles and three-quarters, are as follow: —-Kinkle, Survoy, Makoi. Bridegroom, Floodlight, Bells of Bow, Black Musk, Gaine’s Choice, King Rey, En Tour, Dividend, Jewish Lad, Chat, Clarion Call, Aussie Ra, Kaiwaka, Streamline, All Irish, Gar Vaals, Disturbed, Jewelled Girdle, Clooneen, Limbohm, Saccone, Ruling Star, Tigreterre, Smiling Thru, Beverley, Baldric, Inness Lad, Dark Rose, Fleur D’Or, Padnos, Dozie Boy, Glen Abb, Conflagration, High Peer, Hunting Chorus, Rey Lu, Lapidarian.

Kentucky. The Great Easter winner, Kentucky, scored his fifth win in 20 starts this season. Some idea of how he has improved since the spring can be gathered by the fact that Lord Nuffield gave him 161 b and ran him to a neck in the Criterion Handicap. Lord Nuffield was thus meeting him on 161 b better terms and with so much in his favour seemed sure to beat the Vermeer colt, who might possibly be in danger of suffering from over-racing. Lord Nuffield would, according to form, beat Kentucky, but as he does not shape well in heavy going had the pen put through his name. Still the fact remains that Lord Nuffield ran second to Boloyna at Oamaru in soft going, but the going at Riccarton would be deeper than at Oamaru. Lord Nuffield certainly seems to have been deprived of a fair opportunity to win.

Two-year-old Winners. Ten two-year-old winners during the Easter meetings brought the number of first-year successes in the Dominion this season to 107 and the tally of individual winners to 61. Colts and geldings now have a lead of 17 points over the fillies. The only maiden two-year-olds to win during the recent meetings were Kevin and Egyptian Rose.
