FATAL ACCIDENT AT ORAKEI. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! ■ AUCKLAND, April 17. Struck by the scoop of a large excavator which he was helping to load on a trailer on the Orakei railway overbridge, an employee of the Public Works Department received injuries from which he died almost immediately. He was: Alfred Edward Phelan, married, aged about 60, of Ponsonby. Mr Phelan was struck on the head by the scoop, which dropped during the loading operation. He was extensively injured and died before help could be brought. He was a brother of Mr E. J. Phelan, No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority.
