Members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force serving outside New Zealand during the war are now deemed to be serving together and acting in combination with the Royal Air Force, according to a notice appearing in last night’s Gazette. Wireless Operators.
Regulations gazetted last night are designed to facilitate the supply of operators to meet the requirements of the Shipping Radio Emergency Regulations under which the Naval Board has power to require New Zealand ships to carry a greater number of operators than in peace time. They provide for the issue of provisional first, second and third grade operators' certificates to men after instruction in a special school, thus enabling them to go to sea at once. Mr H. D. Acland, of Christchurch, has advised Mr C. J. S. Harcourt, of Wellington, that a cablegram was received yesterday from England informing him that a letter had been received from his daughter, Miss Phillippa Acland. written on January 12, requesting Lady Acland, of Newbury, to "Tell family not to worry, that we are on ship, very well looked after and fit.” It is thought that the use of the word “we” means also the other passengers of the Port Hobart, including Miss Eveline Harcourt. On or about November 24, the Mackay radio station of America picked up a message that the Port Hobart was being shelled by a German raider in the Atlantic, some 500 miles N E of Port Rico
