'FIGURES FOR EASTER. Racegoers invested an aggregate of £484,784 through the totalisators at nine racing and trotting meetings held throughout New Zealand on Saturday and Monday. The amount handled represents an increase of £5934 in comparison with similar fixtures held on the same days last year, when £478,850 was put through the machines. Figures for the autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie have been mounting steadily in recent years. The total in 1938 was £132,420, in 1939 £153,838, in 1940 £161,350, and this year £177,790. The attendance at the two days' racing showed an increase of 2000, tins year’s total being about 45,500. The following table shows turnovers for the Easter meetings this year and in 1940:—
Royal Lancer. In the spring of the season an offer of lOOOgns was made for Royal Lancer, but on the advice of his trainer, F. W. Ellis, no deal took place. Royal Lancer has trained on during the season, and is now a better horse than at any other time during his career. Royal Lancer has won nine times this season, and recent displays suggest that he will win in better company than he has met up to date. Royal Lancer is easily the best sired by Irish Lancer.
Mildura’s Success. Mildura’s win in the Doncaster Handicap ranks him close to High Caste as a contender for the title of best miler in Australia, says the Sydney “Daily Telegraph.” For a horse who raced lightly Mildura has won a substantial share of the turf's good prizes. He has only had 38 starts for 14 wins, six seconds, and three thirds. Mr E. J. Watt gave 500 guineas for Mildura as a yearling in 1937, and he has won £13,090 in stakes. E. McMenamin’s four wins on Saturday earned him £332 in percentages. The riding time for the four races totalled under seven minutes.
Sydney Cup Winner. Lucrative, in. winning the Sydney Cup, proved himself the best stayer of the season. The time. 3min was the fastest ever made in the Sydney Cup or the Melbourne Cup. His win made him the seventh three-year-old to achieve the St. Leger and Cup double since the inception of the St. Leger in 1867. Lucrative is a bay colt by Gay Lothario from Balkan. Star, by Great Star, and was purchased as a yearling by his present owners, Messrs McLean and Levin, of Sydney, for 459 guineas.
