POLICE RAID
ON ALLEGED OPIUM DEN. HEAVILY BARRICADED PREMISES. (By Telegraph—Press Association. • AUCKLAND, April 111. Forcing their way through heavy doors to effect an entry, three detectives conducted a raid this morning on an alleged opium den at Grey’s Avenue. The party found that the windows of the house, which has been subjected to police visits in the past, were heavily barricaded with iron. After a saw had been used without results, detectives smashed in the front and rear doors, which were heavily timbered with drawbars. Two more heavy doors had to be forced before the centre of the house could be reached. No resistance was offered by the inmates.
At a special sitting of the Magistrates’ Court before justices of the peace this afternoon, Ah Jong was charged with being the occupier of the premises and Gin Ah On with having in his possession a quantity of prepared opium. Both were remanded on bail. The remaining six Chinese foupd in the house will appear on summons later.
