MERCHANT SHIPPING
LOSSES BY ENEMY ACTION ONLY MONTHLY REPORTS HENCEFORTH. STATEMENT OF REASONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 15. The British and Allied shipping losses for March were 394,417 tons. The losses for April will be issued about the middle of May. Many reasons have contributed to the decision to issue monthly instead of weekly the figures of losses of merchant shipping by enemy action.
The weekly issue had been continued because it was felt that the advantage of telling the world the truth outweighed the possible assistance which the enemy might obtain in the way of information, but now it is more essential than ever that the enemy should be kept in the dark as to the possible proportion of losses due to submarine or air attack, raider, or mine, and the slightest deduction he might make from weekly figures might have some effect on the “Battle of the Atlantic.” Another consideration is that the sea areas covered are now so wide that it has been found impossible to obtain figures in time to make the weekly losses comprehensive.
