CRITICAL DAYS

PRESENT WAR SITUATION DIFFICULT SURVEY BY LORD HALIFAX CONFIDENCE IN ULTIMATE OUTCOME. REINFORCEMENTS FOR MIDDLE EAST. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, April 16. The British Ambassador, Lord Halifax, as the guest at a dinner of the Englishspeaking Union, said: “ While the present situation is anxious, there is no reason to suppose that it will not be held. Every stage in his forward movement imposes new difficulties on the enemy’s problem of maintenance, while the British supply lines are shortened.

“A stream of British reinforcements of men and material is flowing into the theatre of war, and this process will be greatly helped by President Roosevelt’s opening of the Red Sea to United States shipping. “The British sea power is undiminished and in the end will play a large part in bringing down the pillars of the Nazi temple. Ebb and flow must always mark the tide of war, but I have complete confidence in the ultimate outcome.”
