LONDON, April 16. AN ADMIRALTY COMMUNIQUE STATES THAT BRITISH NAVAL FORCES ON TUESDAY NIGHT INTERCEPTED AND ANNIHILATED A SOUTHWARD-BOUND ENEMY CONVOY BETWEEN SICILY AND TRIPOLI. THE CONVOY CONSISTED OF FIVE SUPPLY SHIPS AMD THREE DESTROYERS. Two of the supply ships, of about 5,000 tons each, were heavily laden with motor transport. These ships were sunk. Two other ships, of about 3,000 tons each, were probably transports. These were also blown up. The convoy escort comprised an Italian destroyer of 1,628 tons and two smaller destroyers. All three were sunk. One of the enemy vessels was an ammunition ship, of about 4,000 tons, which blew up with a terrific explosion. The Admiralty regrets to announce that during this successful operation H.M.S. Mohawk was hit by a torpedo and sunk. The majority of the ship’s complement was rescued.

Those saved from H.M.S. Mohawk include the commanding officer.
