UNITED FRONT
NECESSARY TO PUT FACTS BEFORE TRIBUNAL. Another Masterton retailer said it was essential to form an organised front and put the actual position of retailers straight to the tribunal. At present individuals could not get any satisfaction. The method adopted by the tribunal of fixing prices in relation to increased costs and not on the percentage of profit was not workable. The drapery business was run on a percentage basis and if prices were fixed on the increased costs the percentage of profit dropped while the overhead charges remained the same. It was hoped, by forming an organised front, to secure from the tribunal a proper basis on which to work. It was. however, very difficult to control the price of many lines of goods, as many factors operated. The retailer expressed a doubt as to whether much profiteering could be done under the circumstances, as competition was still keen and any cases of actual profiteering could be dealt with under the Board of Trade Act. which, he understood. still operated.
