AID FOR EIRE
CONDITIONAL ON GRANT OF BASES
REPORTED AMERICAN PROPOSAL.
NEGOTIATOR AT PRESENT IN WASHINGTON.

The Administration is said to be considering the extension of lendlease aid to Ireland, conditional on Eire giving Britain the use of a number of sites for bases. It is understood that the proposal is connected with Eire's efforts to purchase foodstuffs and arms in the United States, for which purpose the Irish Minister for Defence Co-ordination, Mr Frank Aiken, is at present in Washington. Hitherto Mr Aiken, it is reported, has rejected conditional aid. but the latest information is more optimistic concerning the possibilities.
