BIG THIRST
BEER CONSUMPTION IN SOUTH AFRICAN CAMP. Seven hundred cases of beer a day, or 8.400 bottles —this represents the consumption at the Premier Mine military camp, South Africa. Distribution is effected by about 50 canteens. The leading breweries have brought these facts to the attention of the authorities in support of an application for a special licence for the transport of beer to Premier Mine by road instead of by rail.
The application has not yet been granted as the railway authorities contend that the Railways are quite competent to handle the whole of the beer traffic. It is claimed that regular trains go to Premier Mine and that no special road transport is necessary.
Against this the breweries state that deliveries have to be effected within one hour of being placed, while empties have to be taken away daily.
