DEFENCE OF GREENLAND
UNDERTAKEN BY UNITED STATES. AGREEMENT WITH DENMARK. WASHINGTON, April 10. The United States embraced Greenland within its hemisphere defence system today, under an agreement permitting the establishment of air bases. President Roosevelt said it was proposed to make sure that the big island would remain a Danish colony, adding that the present step, which in effect brings Greenland under the protection of the United States Government, “is new proof of our continuing friendliness toward Denmark.” The agreement was signed late yesterday by the Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, and Mr Henride Kauffman, Danish Minister. Reasons for the conclusion of the agreement between the State Department and the Danish Minister in Washington, by which the United States assumes responsibility for lhe safety of Greenland, are well understood in London, where the fact that the agreement has been negotiated is regarded as a welcome indication of sympathy between the United States and the people of Denmark, states a British Official Wireless message.
