PRODUCTION IN UNITED STATES

The American Iron and Steel Institute reports that the steel industry in March operated to 100 per cent, capacity for the first time since May, 1929, and established a new high tonnage record, turning out more than 7,000,000 tons of steel.

Unfortunately the steel wage and the price situation continues confused. Recently National Steel set the pace for the new high wage scale by increasing it by 10 cents an hour. Informed officials are of opinion that steel production will shortly be boosted over its rated capacity by reducing the length of shutdowns.

Government officials have asked shipbuilders immediately to consider the practicability of doubling" the output in order to meet Britain’s emergency requiremen ts.
