SOCIAL EVILS
POSITION TO BE FACED. DISCUSSION BY WOMEN’S OR GANISATIONS. A meeting called by Mrs K. Groves, president of the Wairarapa Council, Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, was held yesterday afternoon al the Women’s Division Rest Room, King Street. In addition to Women's Division members, representatives of women’s institutes, Townswomen’s Guild, League of Mothers, Girl Guide Association and Welfare League were present.
Mrs Groves, presiding, stated >ial the reason the meeting had been carted was to consider whether the < various organisations represented could find ways and means of combating the many social evils unfortunately so prevalent in th?ir midst. She referred especially to criminal abortion and its various contributing causes. It was no use women adopting a hush-hush polisy regarding these matters. The evil had to be faced and fought. She asked members present to give free expression to their opinions. After a general discussion it was decided that a copy of the recommendations of the report of the committee of inquiry into the various aspects of the problem of abortion in Now Zealand, commonly known as the McMillan Report. set up in August, 193 G. be forwarded to each organisation for discussion by their members. It was arranged that a further meeting be held in the same place at 2 p:m. on May 28 when delegates would report the opinion of the organisations they represented. Representatives of any other women's organisations aie invited to attend.
