CAUGHT IN THE ACT
MAN ORDERED FORTNIGHT IN GAOL. FOR SYPHONING PETROL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Richard Thomas Carroll, a labourer, aged 43, took his wife and two children to the city in a large ear last night. Ho parked his car, produced a tin and tube and started syphoning petrol from a nearby car. A detective saw him when lie had obtained a gallon and a half, and as a result Carroll today was sentenced to a fortnight in gaol. The prosecution said Carroll was a Scheme 13 worker and it was dilficul,: to understand how ho could run a big car. Counsel for defence pointed out that Carroll’s last offence was in 193.1. Detective McClung: "Yes. .ho was in gaol lor four years for ihat."
