A statement that in the Battle of the Atlantic Britain's losses in ships and tonnage were very heavy, and that they could not continue indefinitely without seriously affecting Britain’s war.effort, was made by Mr Churchill in the House of ('miimons, states Ihe 8.8.C'. If Britain were Io get through 1941. he said, she would have to get considerable help from the t'niled Slates, similar Io Hie prodigious building programme of 1917. He was confident that help would bo fort hcoining.
It is announced that ten United States revenue cutters have already been sent to Britain and will soon be in action against enemy submarines.
The chairman of\ the United States Maritime Commission announced that nearly 2,000 ships were to be constructed for Britain —950 merchant ships and 915 naval craft.

The Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, today announced a rally on May 7 “as a move into the period in which we must prepare the mind of America for convoying goods across the Atlantic. Our task is to convince the American people that Hitler means exactly what he says. When they do they will not quibble about working seven days a week or twentyfour hours a day to produce materials and they will not quibble about seeing those materials delivered.”
