WAR ON U-BOATS
ADMIRALTY STATEMENT
NUMBER DESTROYED WITH ALL HANDS.
OPERATIONS CONTINUING VIGOROUSLY.
An Admiralty communique gives a reassuring statement about the Battle of the Atlantic, the 8.8. C. reports. The communique states that operations against the U-boats continue with ever-increasing vigour. A number of U-boats have been destroyed from which it has not been possible to save any members of the crews.
More than 50 officers and 400 petty officers and men are held as prisoners of war and a number of prisoners have also been captured from Italian submarines. Among the prisoners is one of the most notable U-boat commanders in the German Navy. LOST SHIPS TOTAL FOR LAST WEEK IN MARCH. Fob the last week of March, the 82nd of the war, 77,000 tons of shipping were lost, the 8.8. C. states. This is 17,000 tons higher than the previous week’s total but considerably less than the total for the 80th week, when 146.000 tons were lost. Seven ships not previously counted for this week are overdue and are now presumed to have been lost.
