TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Wairarapa Easter Meeting
(BY
“THE GRAFTER.”)
The Wairarapa Racing Club’s meeting has brought forth satisfactory entries, and given fine weather the gathering should be a successful one. The Easter Handicap provides a strong field. Native Song is top weight with 9.0. The Hunting Song gelding has won seven races in seventeen starts and has been three times second. His last two wins were at Waiioa on January 30. He was second to Lambourn in the Te Mahanga Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting last month, and second to Diana Tetrix in the Uawa Stakes at Tolaga Bay in February over 1} miles. Native Song has a solid weight to carry but nevertheless should be in the stake money. Gay Fox has shown consistent form during the season, having saluted the judge four times, while he has filled second place six times and third position on five occasions out of 23 starts. He won the Rangitikei Cup on March 1 over the Easter Handicap distance, Piastre being among the unplaced horses. The Pahiatua Cup in January fell to him, Piastre being second, the distance being 11 miles. He won the Douro Handicap (1 mile) at Trentham on the second day, Kotua being second and King’s Toast third. On form the Foxbridge gelding will be a very hard proposition to beat at Tauherenikau.
Counter is training well and April 12 may be his lucky clay. .He has won two races and been five times second. Master Cyklon has won two races this season, been three times second and a similar number of times third, while he has been unplaced some eighteen times. Form does not point to him leading the field home. In his recent efforts The Monarch has done well, his last six starts producing two wins, a second and two thirds. His wins were in the Ngaio Handicap (1 mile 3fur.) at Wellington and in the North Island Hack Plate (I: 1 , miles) at the Manawatu meeting on March 22. The Monarch should prove a hard horse to beat at Tauherenikau if the going suits him. Gladynev will be passed over on form. Piastre has shown consistent form for four wins and two seconds this season. He won the Autumn Handicap at Trentham last month and ran second to Colonel Bogey at Awapuni over 'LI miles, Gladynev filling third place. The Salmagundi gelding will be sure of good support for the Easter Handicap at Tauherenikau. The Siegfried gelding Siglow has won six races this season in twenty starts, four since the February meeting of the Waikato Racing Club, where he scored a double, both being mile events. Ho won the Hot Springs Handicap over a mile at Te Aroha and the Wairarapa County Cup over I.J miles at the Carterton meeting, last month. He ran third to Kathbella and Scandal in the Longburn Handicap at Awapuni last month, the distance being seven furlongs. Siglow should bp very fit for the Wairarapa meeting. Minority won a double at the Wanganui meeting nt Awapuni last week. The Foxbridge gelding had started twice previously, registering a win over 7 furlongs at the Taranaki-Eg-mont-Wanganui meeting in August last, and running third to Doh Quex and Joan Peel at Avondale over one mile. His wins at the Wanganui meet-
