RAID ON SOFIA
REPLY TO' ENEMY BOMBING OF BELGRADE Punishing Attacks by Royal Air Force NAZI TROOPS AND TRANSPORT HARRIED IN STRUMA VALLEY OBJECTIVES IN RUMANIA ALSO RECEIVE ATTENTION Aircraft of the Royal Air Force have quickly replied to the German air attack• on Belgrade (states the 8.8. C.) by bombing German military concentrations at Sofia. The main railway yards, road junctions, warehouses, a large factory and other objectives were heavily bombed. Many explosions were reported and one large fire and several smaller ones broke out. In one case trucks were hurled into the air. After carrying out the bombing attack the planes dived and machine-gunned motor transport on roads in the Struma Valley, causing considerable damage. All the British planes taking part in the raid returned, safely. The Struma Valley is a series of basins separated by deep gorges dominated by rocky cliffs. Besides Sofia, it is reported that a railway and road junction in Rumania, which is being used as a jumping off place by the Germans, was also attacked by planes. YUGOSLAV ATTACK IN ALBANIA A Yugoslav radio station announces that Yugoslav artillery opened fire all along- the Albanian frontier in preparation for an attack against the Italians in Albania. MESSERSCHMITTS SHOT DOWN R.A.F. Hurricanes in their first battle with German planes on the Greek-Bulgarian frontier, shot down five Messerschmitts. A Cairo communique, making this announcement, said several other enemy planes were severely damaged. The British planes were unscathed, although outnumbered by more than two to one. FIERCE FRONTIER BATTLE Fierce fighting is reported to be going on on the GreekBulgarian frontier, but there is little news about it. The Greeks, in addition to destroying ten German tanks, h’ave captured a number of prisoners. The Germans claim to have advanced ... J/rom 20 to 25 miles on the south-east front, but admit that the ' enemy is fighting obstinately. General de Gaulle, speaking in Cairo, says he expects that Free French forces will take part in the Balkan battle and that possibly he would go there himself. Several thousands of Czechs in Yugoslavia who had escaped from their own country have volunteered to serve with the Yugoslav army. The Turkish Cabinet had another meeting yesterday. Be1 fore the meeting, which was attended Iby the Turkish Chief of General Staff, the Turkish Grand National Assembly is reported to have met. RELATIONS WITH HUNGARY SEVERED Great Britain has broken off diplomatic relations with Hungary, which has now become a base for operations against the Allies. The Hungarian Government has broadcast an energetic protest to the Yugoslav Foreign Minister about Yugoslav air attacks. In a dog fight over Yugoslavia the Hungarians claim that British planes supported the Yugoslav machines. Railway stations in several Hungarian towns are reported to have been bombed.
