CENTRAL SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE TUITION IN SWIMMING. MASTERTON DENTAL CLINIC FEES. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held in the school last night, there being present: Messrs A. Dixon, J. H. Cole, W. R. Nicol, A. I. Gibbs, P. H. Shaw, C. J. Braggins, A. E. Nelson and the headmaster, Mr E. G. Coddington. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. E. McV.Calwell and Butler. In the unavoidable absence of Mr Calwell, Mr Dixon was voted to the chair. The financial statement, which was adopted, showed a satisfactory position. It was decided to allow the school to be used as a polling booth at the coming municipal elections. The unanimous decision to send a letter of warm appreciation to Mr A. AV. G. Rollings for his many years of service as secretary and treasurer to the committee was recorded. The headmaster read his monthly report. which showed that the roll was steadily rising, there having been twelve new admissions since l;>.r- ceting and two withdrawals thy( i.n removal to other towns. SicknessHfiad reduced the attendance but not very remarkably. The percentage of attendance had fallen very little below 90 per cent.
The swimming season had closed and thanks were due to the council for use of baths, and to the custodian for his unfailing courtesy. "Miss Spiers had been very useful in this connection. No fewer than 209 certificates for distances swum had been issued, including 2 for 1 mile and over 40 for across the baths. In addition ten intermediate certificates for life saving and one bronze medallion had been earned by the pupils. Miss Spiers (physical education specialist) had spent several weeks at the school and was now being shared by the other schools of the district. Miss Spiers had carried out very useful work. Mr Williams, first assistant, had been given leave of absence for the duration of the war. Mr Munn had secured a position in Taranaki. Mr O'Kane was relieving and Mr Cleland had returned from Territorial Camp. Good work had been carried out in the East grounds which were now in fine order. Messrs Shaw and Cole reported on work carried out in the recreation ground and were thanked lor their efforts. In connection with the Dental Clinic it was shown that a good result had been obtained in the collection of fees last year. A small sub-committee was set up to deal with clinic matters and an oiler of Mr Gibbs to ask the East School Home and School Association to handle clinic matters for the East end was accepted with thanks. The Central School Parents' Association was granted the use of the school for the purpose of running its seasonal dances on the same condition as previously.
