DECLARATION BY KING OF THE HELLENES

DEFENCE TO LAST MAN. CONFIDENCE IN OUTCOME. i By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright 1 (Received This Day. 9.10 a.m.) ATHENS, April 6. The King issued the following proclamation: “Greeks will defend their- honour to the last man. The mighty British Empire and the United States are on our side and we are fighting side by side with our brothers, the Yugoslavs. We will win witfi God’s blessing.” The. proclamation added: “The German Minister called on the Premier at 5.30 a.m. and notified that the German army would attack Greece. Simultaneously information from the front showed that the German threats had already been put into effect. Thus at dawn on April 6 the other member of the . Axis repeated the events of the night of October 28, 1940. Before this new coveting of the honour, liberty and integrity of our country the Greek army and people again are called on to do, with power, magnanimity and firmness their duty to the Fatherland, confident that they are right and with the blessing of God and the help of valiant allies.”

Large crowds gathered at military headquarters, cheering the King, the Premier and generals, as they entered the building.
