BRITISH IMPERIAL TROOPS REACH ADDIS ABABA
Italians in Hopeless Position PROBABLY FIGHTING ONLY UNDER NAZI PRESSURE CLOSE APPROACH MADE ALSO TO MASSAWA British Imperial forces have reached Addis Ababa, the capital of Abyssinia, after a remarkably rapid advance, the 8.8. C. reports. Although our troops have entered the city, it is not stated whether they have actually captured it yet. The view is held that the Italian garrison may have evacuated the city. Addis Ababa was held by a garrison of considerable strength. It might be the Italian aim to resist as long as possible to further Hitler’s plans in the Balkans. The R.A.F. and South African Air Force made a vital contribution to this latest success when they carried out a heavy raid on objectives in Addis Ababa on Friday. Direct hits were obtained on aerodromes, buildings and barracks. It is believed in London that the Italian forces in East Africa are continuing their useless struggle under German pressure. In Eritrea blockages on the main road to Massawa, the Italian naval base, have been cleared away and the British forces are steadily advancing towards the port. Patrols of the Free French forces are reported to be only eight miles from Massawa.
