WANGANUI MEETING

MINORITY WINS AGAIN. A NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 6. The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club concluded at Awapuni on Saturday in fine weather and in the presence of a large crowd. The totalisator investments showed a substantial increase over the corresponding meeting last year, which was held at Wanganui. There was an unusual number of accidents in the flat racing, three horses falling. Massorah came down, in the third race, the Languard Handicap, and Clarion Call and Mahaina both fell while contesting the sixth event, the Harrison Hack. W. J. Mudford, who rode Massorah, received slight concussion and did not ride again during the day. He was unable to remember any incident which could throw any light upon the happening. D. W. Redstone, who rode Clarion Call, escaped with a shaking- and rode again in the last race, but T. Kilgour, rider of Mahaina was taken to hospital with leg injuries. So far as could be ascertained the accident happened when the horses were shuffling for position to round the turn out of the straight.

The only other inquiry was held into the finish of the seventh race, won narrowly by Surveyor-General from Khurja. When Surveyor-General came up on .the outer with a strong challenge he locked, with Khurja and it was alleged that Khurja was crowded for room. After hearing evidence the judicial committee decided that while there may have been some crowding toward the finish it was unintentional and decided not to disturb the judge's placings, nor to take any other action. The totalisator handled £28,046, compared with £12,304 10s on the second day last year at Wanganui. The total for the meeting was £45,973- 10s, compared with £22,851 10s on the club’s own course. B.
