GENEROUS RESPONSE

TO NATIONAL WAR FUNDS APPEAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT BY FINANCE MINISTER. DONATIONS FROM N.Z. WORKERS’ UNION. | (By Telegraph—Press Association.) _ WELLINGTON. This Day. A striking feature of the response to the Government's appeal for voluntary and interest free war loans and donations. which is now rapidly approaching the splendid total of £3.000,000, has been the generosity of some of the Workers' organisations in subscribing to the appeal. This fact was commented upon by the Hon. W. Nash (Minister of Finance) in acknowledging a further donation of £BBB 14s 3d from the members of the New Zealand Workers’ Union. “This is the third occasion on which the union has responded so generously to the Government’s appeal for war funds.” the Minister states. “At the annual conference in 1940 it was decided to lend £5.000, free of interest, for the duration of the war and six months thereafter, which amount was received on June 27, 1940. Again, on September 25 last, £1.200 representing a donation by members, was forwarded with the promise of more to follow. In fulfilment of that pledge, the Gov- 1 ernment has now received a further amount of £BBB 14s 3d. “The two last-mentioned donations are especially welcome,” added Mr Nash, “because they represented straight-out gifts from members themselves and no doubt called for a considerable sacrifice. Every penny given now is a blow struck for the preservation of those democratic ideals and institutions upon which our way of life depends.”
