FRENCH AFRICA
NAZI GRIP TIGHTENED MOROCCO VIRTUALLY USED AS MILITARY BASE. BOMBERS AT CASABLANCA. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, April 3. The Lisbon correspondent of “The Times” says there is no longer any doubt that the Germans have tightened their grip on French Morocco. There may not he many there, but they are working in close association with the French authorities and are virtually using the territory as a military base. Travellers observed seven or eight Dornier bombers at Casablanca aerodrome, with appropriate fighter escorts. These machines almost daily set out north or south on what may well be operational flights. About 20 German officers are stationed at Casablanca, and Germans are also stationed in all the coastal towns from Mogador to the frontier of Tangier. German propaganda is unexpectedly directed more against the French than against the British, dwelling on the weakness of the French regime and the consequent desirability of fuller collaboration with the new order.
