Y.M.C.A. WORK

i ACTIVITIES OF PAST YEAR ANNUAL REPORT. SERVICES WELL MAINTAINED. In presenting the 36th annual report of the Masterton Y.M.C.A.. the directors state, inter alia, “that the year has been a busy and successful one. a year of real achievement. This has been brought about in spite of the necessity for a change in the chief executive officer. During the year, Mr D. McKee Wright was called upon by the National Council to take charge of Y.M.C.A. work at the Rongotai Air Force Branch. His resignation from this association was received with sincere regret and our best wishes go with I him in his new sphere of work. His! place was filled, at first temporarily,! and later permanently by Mr C. W. Gaze, who has taken up his work enthusiastically and with a real understanding of the requirements of the young people with whom he came in contact. Your directors wish to express their pleasure at the zealous way I in which our new general secretary | has taken up his duties and show ap-1 predation of his conscientious work in | connection therewith. The task is not I an easy one, for it is recognised there i are indeed many calls upon the offi-1 cers, members, building and equipment of the association.”

The report states that the membership had been well maintained; as the result of an appeal for funds £303 was raised and the association had played a prominent part in the £1.000,000 Patriotic Appeal. Physical classes were maintained throughout the season for boys (junior, intermediate and secondary), a jiu-jitsu class and others for girls and a folk dancing class were also held. The basketball activities were well supported. Other phases of activity include cricket, swimming, table tennis, stamp club, reading, etc. The annual boys’ camp in January was successfully conducted. Enquiries were attended to for boys to do garden work etc., and the association's facilities were placed at the disposal of men of the fighting services. "Owing to pressure of other activities and removals from the district there have been gaps created in the ranks of the directorate and there exists a need for public spirited men, who desire to help the generation that is about to take the reins,” the report states. “Here is an opening for service which cannot be overrated and we would emphasise this need to all who can make themselves available.” Thanks are expressed to all who have helped the work of the association in any way.
