MEETING AT MASTERTON. A meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held this week at the residence of Mrs H. Speight, Johnstone Street, when Miss Tankersley presided over a record attendance. Several apologies for absence were received. Mrs Jansen led the devotions. The temperance fact reads as follows: “In one pound of bread there are 566 grains of muscle building food. In a pint of milk there are 358. In a barrel of whisky, none.” Musical items were rendered by Mesdames Ordish, Heyder, Snowsill and Speight. Visitors were present from Auckland and the Dalefield Union. Miss Tankersley presented an interesting report of the recent Dominion Convention held in Nelson. It was felt m some quarters, said Miss Tankersley, that a Convention should not be held during war time and in welcoming the delegates the District President. Mrs Walker, said that the evils which we were fighting were still present and the Union motto “For God, Home and Humanity" applied now as never before. If peace, purity and prohibition were taught more in the homes there would be better harmony and no liquor traffic. Because of the war women had a lot on their hands, a greater task than ever. Liquor was as great an enemy as Hitler, for it was the cause of quarrelling and impurity which were home-breakers. Youth work was very encouraging. Over 2000 were receiving instruction' in Bands of Hope and the L.T.L. besides 9000 in Cradle Roll department. Some 60 to 70 delegates attended a much lower number than usual. Votes of thanks were passed to Miss Tankersley, to Mrs Speight for her hospitality, and those who contributed items. A very pleasant, gathering terminated with the singing of the Temperance Doxology and the benediction pronounced by Miss Tankersley.
