The strike at Ford’s River Rouge plant is the most serious labour i situation in the United States. The plant is the largest industrial unit , in the world, employing 98,000 ! workers. Sporadic fighting between pickets ! and non-strikers broke out the gates of the plant this morning, when the day shift was reporting for work. About 150 pickets, with bricks ’ and ' clubs, battled with groups of em- ) ployees. Later about 200 men, mostly , negroes, armed with steel rods, bolts '■ and bits of metal, emerged from the works and began pelting the Congress of Industrial Organisation pickets, who retaliated. The police were virtually 1 helpless. for a time, but when the fighters broke up into small groups, officers intervened and escorted the non-strikers back to the plant.
