The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall and Lady Newall, arrived by special plane at the R.N.Z.A.F. station. North Taieri, late yesterday afternoon, on. their first official visit to Dunedin. This morning his Excellency formally opened tfie Dunedin Centennial Memorial on Signal Hill. On. Friday morning and later that day the vice-regal party will leave by plane for Wigram.

Mr. A. Bellow, chief postmaster, Wanganui, who has been promoted to chief postmaster, at Wellington, Constable R. J. Berry, of the Masterton Police Force, who, accompanied by Mrs Berry, has been away on annual leave, has resumed duties. The death occurred at a private hospital in Auckland of Captain H. A. Dinner. D.S.C., aged 63. superintendent, of mercantile marine at Auckland.

The Rev. W. Elliott, for the past 11 years minister of the Whangarei Presbyterian Church, has .accepted a call to St. James's Church, Wellington.

The Hon. Adam Hamilton, member of the War Cabinet, accompanied by Mrs. Hamilton, left Wellington by last night’s steamer’ express for the south.

The death of Mr. J. E. Jensen, Princess Street, Palmerston North, breaks a long connection with the building industry in that city and the surrounding district. Mr. Jensen, who was born in Denmark 58 years ago, came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of six and settled in Palmerston North. The death occurred- suddenly last Saturday of Mr. Samuel Alfred Lindsay. who was one of the Dominion’s leading jockeys about 40 years ago. Mr. Lindsay has been living in retirement for many years. In his day he rode many important winners, and had the distinction of winning the New Zealand Cup on three occasions, his successful mounts being Rosenfeldt, Tirant d'Eau, an Seahorse. He also won the Auckland Cup on Leopold.

A well-known Dargaville resident Mr. Alfred E. Harding, celebrated his 80th birthday recently, and was entertained by many friends, including the mayor of Dargaville, and other local body representatives. Mr. Harding. who has been a member of the Meat Board since 1923. was the first member for Kaipara in the House of Representatives. He has been on the Hobson County Council for 24 years, nine years as chairman, a representative on the Kaipara Hospital Board, and a leading breeder of stud beef cattle, sheep and draught horses. Three sons are serving with the armed forces.
