’ AUSTRALIA’S CAR IMPORTS. i FROM NORTH AMERICA. i Only 8890 car chassis and 7503 truck ; chassis will be imported by Australia ‘ from North America during the quota year May 1, 1941 to April 30. 1942. These totals represent a reduction of 35 per cent, for cars and 45 per cent, for trucks on the qtiota for the base year ended April 30, 1936, when the chassis imports quota from North America was 58,801. Defence orders will be excluded from the new quota. Announcing the Federal Government’s decision to establish the quota the Minister for Trade and Customs (Mr. E. J. Harrison) said it did not necessarily reflect the Government's opinion regarding Australian market possibilities of chassis from the nonsterling area. Mr Harrison said that the percentage reduction would not apply to the first 75 chassis of the total quota held, and that no alteration was proposed in connection with the undermentioned conditions which applies in the 1940-41 quota period—(a) The substitution of. one chassis for another will be limited to transfers—from car chassis to truck chassis only: (b) defence orders will be excluded' from quota: (c) imports during the year ended April 30, 1942, will be spread so that no more than 40 * pci’ cent, of any importer's quota may be imparted during any consecutive four months. Adjustments may bo made in cases in which less than 60 per cent, of the quota has been imported in the first, eight months.
