MEAT EXPORTS

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT PLANS HELPING THE FAT LAMB INDUSTRY. ASSURANCE OF REASONABLE PRICES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright! CANBERRA, March 31. The Common-wealth Government's prohibition of the slaughtering of export mutton and lamb is one aspect of a wider plan to help the fat lamb industry during the period of shipping shortage. The Minister of Commerce. Sir Earle Page, said the Government wanted to clear stores of all mutton and lamb before the spring season opened and make sure that the growers get reasonable prices. He explained that in the event of prices of lamb failing to reach a certain level, the Government would buy at a rate to be decided upon. With the opening of the season for spring lamb production the Government would purchase the whole of the exportable classes of lamb at prices which would ensure a reasonable return to the growers. Further, if the prices of mutton did not reach a certain, level to be decided upon, the Government would buy canned mutton at a rate which would permit canners to specify reasonable prices to growers.
