Their Excellencies, the GovernorGeneral, and Lady Newall, left Wellington yesterday afternoon to pay their first official visit to New Plymouth. and to be present, at the Taranaki Centennial celebrations.
Mr. W. Gibson, of Church Street, Masterton, who has been on a health recruiting visit to Auckland, has returned home.
The death occurred in Levin recently at the age of 85 of Mr George Watson, starter for the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre in the early years of the century. The Rt Hon P. Fraser, Prime Minister. left Wellington on Saturday for New Plymouth to take part in the Taranaki Centennial celebrations. He will return to Wellington tonight. The unanimous selection of Mr Harker, M.P.. as the National Party's candidate for the Waipawa seat at the next general election was made at the annual meeting of the Waipawa electorate of the party, and Mr Harker's name will be sent to the Dominion Council for approval. Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett, of the Masterton Police Station, who, accompanied by Mrs. Doggett, has been on a tour of the Nelson and Marlborough districts during his annual leave will resume duties tomorrow. During his absence Detective-Sergeant W. Kane has been in charge of the local force.
Port chaplain for the Missions to Seamen in Auckland for the past 13 years, the Rev H. K. Vickery has been appointed senior chaplain in the New Zealand hospital ship Maunganui. and will report for duty at Trentham Camp on April 5. He has been granted permission to retain his naval rank as chaplain to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
