SNEAK RAIDING

More daylight “sneak” raids were a feature of yesterday’s German air activity over Britain. A raider swooped from low clouds over a south coast town, blazed away with its machineguns. and dropped explosive bombs, one of which fell close to a feeding centre at which 200 children were having their midday meal. The children scrambled under the tables and there were no casualties. Another bomb wrecked a building in which a number of men were lunching. Five were killed and a number sent to hospital. Rescue workers with acetylene burners cut through twisted ironwork to reach mon and youths trapped in the wreckage of a building after a lone raider bombed another south coast town. Several were found dead and a number injured. A raider which attacked a south-east coast town dived to within 300 feet of the ground before unloosing its bombs. Houses, a school, a church, and a convalescent home were damaged. There were no casualties.

There was a brief alert in the London area early this morning, this being the first, daylight raid on the capital for eight days. A small formation of enemy bombers reached the outskirts of the city, but was quickly driven off.

HOUSES WRECKED IN SOUTH COAST TOWN. NUMBER OF PEOPLE TRAPPED. (Received This Day. 11 a.m.) LONDON, March 23. A short alert was sounded in London this morning, the first for eight days. Low-flying raiders bombed a south coast town, wrecked six houses and damaged many others. It is feared that many people are trapped. The raider machine-gunned the town after the bombing. Some persons were killed or injured when a Restaurant was machine-gunned. Boys from a school nearby rushed to assist in digging out those trapped.
