VIOLENT RAIDS

ON GERMANY AND OCCUPIED PORTS COLOGNE & DUSSELDORFF BLASTED. MANY FIRES IN GOODS YARDS & ELSEWHERE. The R.A.F., the 8.8. C. reports, carried out violent raids on Cologne and Dusseldorf on Thursday night. A number of high explosives and a great many incendiaries were dropped, causing a large number of fires in the goods yards, and elsewhere. One pilot could still see the fires when he was 30 miles away. At Dusseldorf a huge fire was seen near the railway station and after another pilot had dropped his bombs eight more fires started and spread rapidly. The docks at Calais and Dunkirk and the naval base at Brest were also attacked. Very successful attacks have been made on enemy shipping during operations extending from the Frisian Islands to the French Atlantic coast. Naval supply ships were bombed and machine-gunned from a low level. BLAZE STARTED IN RHODES. In the Middle East, the R.A.F. made a successful raid on an aerodrome on the Island of Rhodes. Aerodrome buildings and a petrol dump were set on fire and the blaze could be seen 100 miles away.

COASTAL COMMAND ENEMY SHIPPING HARRIED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, March 28. Yesterday aircraft of the Coastal and Bomber Commands made harassing attacks on enemy shipping. Operations extended from the Frisian Islands to La Rochelle. Naval vessels and supply ships were bombed and machine-gunned from a low level. A supply ship in the harbour of Alderney received direct hits. The Brest naval base was also attacked during the night. Two aircraft of the Coastal Command are missing.

HEINKEL SHOT DOWN ANOTHER BADLY DAMAGED. DURING ABORTIVE ATTACK ON CONVOY. (Received This Day. 11 a.m.) LONDON, March 28. H.M.S. Leith shot down a Hcinkel when it attacked a convoy in the Bristol Channel. The plane’s crew of five wore captured, one being wounded. Another Heinkel was badly damaged. H.M.S. Leith and the convoy suffered no casualties.
