TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Training Operations at Opaki (BY "THE GRAFTER.”) Opaki trainers are busy getting their charges fit for the Easter meetings and a strong contingent is earmarked for Tauherenikau. B. Burgess has some seven horses in work including a two-year-old Lord Quex filly, a well developed animal who is shaping nicely. White Rajah has benifited by his recent racing and should be at top form by Easter, while Augment’s track work suggests the collection of stake money in the near future. Happy Ending is galloping well, and should soon repeat his Te Aroha success. Ashley Jenkins has Cheerful Lady and Counter in good fettle and they should collect at the Easter period if the conditions suit them. Both are worth watching for immediate future events.
Moderate. It is reported 'hat B. Burgess has purchased the Ollatrim—Glow gelding Moderate from Mrs M. Leo and has added it to his Opaki string. Half Caste. Half Caste has improved lately, and should soon be out of the maiden class. A highweight handicap may soon be within reach of the Black Ronald gelding. Lady Montana. The Lord Quex mare Lady Montana has been brought in again for training. She is looking as big as a bullock. Should be well Supported. Enrich and Serenata, horses likely to be well supported if they fulfil their Riccarton engagements at Easter, have also been nominated for the mile Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. As Enrich won the Steward’s Handicap and New Zealand Derby at Riccarton in November and Serenata won the New Zealand Cup, they will probably go south again. Enrich is trained by H. Telford at Trentham, and the Safari colt has been weighted at Bst Gib for the Great Easter and at 7st 131 b for the Great Autumn. His recent form suggests that he is coming back to his best, and as he has shown most of his form at Riccarton he will probably go here in preference to Ellerslie. Serenata is also trained at Trentham, being in T. R. George's team. She only had one race at Trentham, the Thompson Handicap, failing to finish in a place, but she is a good stayer and will find the mile and a half of the Great Autumn Handicap to her liking.

In addition to £3OO already promised, being half the profits of the 1941 race meeting, the Wairoa Racing Club would have been able to hand over a further £B2 to the Wairoa Patriotic Committee had it not been for having to pay out £164 for social security, national security and income tax. The balance sheet for the meeting shows a net profit of £5BO and the Club's generosity in giving £3OO is appreciated.
