TERRITORIAL SERVICE
THE FIFTH BALLOT
MEN TO BE CALLED UP I NEXT WEEK. i I MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. I (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The fifth ballot, which would give the names of men to be called up for Territorial service and the result of which would appear in a Gazette extraordinary to be published on Wednesday next, was a ballot in name only, as the number of men remaining in the classes to be called up. was not greater than the number required, said the Minister of National Service. Mr Semple, in a statement last night. "The National Service Regulations specifically provide that in such a contingency the whole of ‘the residue of the class or classes from which the men are to be drawn may be called up without going through the unnecessary formality of an actual ballot,” Mr Semple said. “As I have stated previously, in order that there may be some stability in the personnel of the Territorial Forces, it was decided not to draft into them any men who are now eligible (or will shortly become eligible) for overseas service. Accordingly, the men called up on this occasion are from either Class Bl (19 years of age) or C (41 to 45 years of age. both inclusive). "The numbers of reservists called up in each of the 12 military districts of the Dominion are as follows: Auckland, 1079; Paeroa, 338; Whangarei, 139; Hamilton. 294; Wellington, 853; Wanganui, 615; Napier, 634; New Plymouth, 356; Nelson, 726; Christchurch. 1156; Dunedin. 774: Invercargill 746; total. 7710. ' "After the publication of this Gazette," said the Minister, “the position will be that all men aged either 19 or 41 to 45 will have been called up unless they are volunteer territorials. or they have been attested for service with the Navy or Air Force and are at present undergoing training or waiting to be called up for training. Any man of the specified ages who is not in any one of the positions indicated must assume that for some reason his name has been wrongly omitted from the register, and for his own protection he should at once communicate with the Director of National Service, Wellington.”
