GREYTOWN
HOCKEY NOTES MEETING OF MEN'S CLUB. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Greytown Men's Hockey Chib, held at the residence of Mr. Maloney there was a good attendance. Mi’. G. Maloney was in the chair. The annual report and balance sheet were presented, both indicating the club to be in a relatively good position. Prospects for the coming season were reported as bright. Mr. Maloney detailed arrangements made to date concerning the clearing of the grounds and expressed the belief that the area would again soon be in good order. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr. W. Everett; president, Mr. G. Maloney; secretary, Mr. J. Anker; auditor, Mr. Scrimegour; six vice-presidents, all good supporters of the game, were also elected. Subscriptions lor the year were fixed at 3s for senior players and 2s for juniors. Inquiries revealed that the possibility of forming a senior team this year was particularly bright, the names of about 15 members being mentioned. The delegates elected to attend the Wairarapa Hockey Association's annual meeting were Messrs. J. Anker and I. Keltic. •
The day for opening the season is to be decided at-a future meeting when the clearing of the grounds has been brought nearer completion. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mr. Maloney for the use of, his residence.
The annual meeting of the Ladies’ Club, which was to have been held last Tuesday, did not eventuate owing to the call made upon the time of members by other local organisations that night. The secretary’s balance sheet and report, however, gave proof of the enthusiastic working of last year's members; while inquiries revealed that the chances of putting a team almost identical with that which did so well last year, are good. Last year's record by the way, was: Played 12, won 12, lost 1. drawn 1; goals for, 68; against, 14.
Further club matters will be discussed at the opening date, which will shortly be notified. An early start with hockey is promised this season. The Wairarapa Ladies’ Association has decided to commence competitions on the first Saturday after Easter, April 19, subject, of course, to suitable transport arrangements being made. Local enthusiasts, therefore should turn out gear and oil up sticks, if not already done, for a knock-up as soon as the grounds ar® mown. Indications at present are that the area should be fit for play by not later than March 29, when a full muster is hoped for. Arrangements, it is understood, have been made for satisfactorily keeping the grounds in order, and players would do well to take advantage of the facilities provided. Physical Training. At present Mr. C. McCalman, instructor in physical drill to the Physical Welfare branch, visits Greytown every Monday evening to train HomeGuard members in the fundamentals of physical training instruction in order to enable them to train their own units. Male members of the local sports bodies could derive a good deal of advantage for themselves as well as for their clubs if they would come forward as possible instructors. The exercises, though simple, are excellent rejuvenators and muscle looseners; and are interspersed with interesting games, etc., all of which provide a splendid basis of training for sports enthusiasts. Club members would thereby also render a double serviceone to their Home Guard unit and one to their clubs. An appeal is made, therefore, to clubs to select Home Guard members of their clubs as prospective instructors.
