MERCURY MINING BOOMS.—Production of mercury in the counties of Napa. Sonoma and Lake has been increased sharply as the United States speeds its national defence programme. More than 40 per cent of the United States production of mercury is mined in this area. Of the local output of 12,000 flasks, 39 per cent has been used commercially or medicinally. 61 per cent is used in the manufacture of explosives. This photo shows a view of the famous Mirabell quicksilver mine in Lake County, which has been in operation since 1883.
