TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Reported Sale of Beau Pere

(BY

"THE GRAFTER.”)

It was stated in a cablegram when Beau Pere left Australia that he had been leased to Mr L. B. Mayer, and .was to return 'from America in time for next stud season. Reports from the United States, however, affirm that he has been sold for £30,000. Whether this is correct remains to be seen, but it may be significant that Mr W. J. Smith (Australian owner ‘of Beau Pere) recently bought Ajax and Manitoba. The first crop of Australian-sired youngsters by Beau Pere are two years old, but none has done anything distinctive so far this season. A number of other English 'sires which did well in New Zealand met with moderate success on being re-exported to the Commonwealth. It is too early yet, however, to form any conclusions regarding Beau Pere.

Route March. The Vaals colt Route March is reported to be training on nicely for engagements at the autumn meetings. In some quarters he is considered the best two-year-old of the season. After two unplaced performances he opened his winning account at Avondale. After being unplaced in the Cambria Handicap; Route March won the Rakino Handicap with 8.7 by a head from Nuna 9.0 in lmin. He won the Great Northern Foal Stakes from Pay Rol, Foreign Coin, Premature, Par Avion and six others in lmin. 13 3-ssecs., and the Royal Stakes with 8.2 in lmin. 12sec. — equal to the race record held by High Caste. According to the Great Northern Foal Stakes, Route March would have to give weight to Pay Roll and Premature, who were at the head of the list in the Pacific Handicap. V/in at First Start. It is a fairly common opinion that a horse does not become a betting proposition until some racing experience has been acquired. No doubt a horse can be improved by racing, and, incidentally, the public is supplied with opportunity to improve its knowledge. Abundant proof exists that a horse can be got into winning shape to back at the first start, and that is the best way to get the money. Ever England is the latest example of this, but some trainers apparently lack confidence in their own judgment and ability to follow a wise example. Peter Pan Injured. While cantering in a paddock at the Baroona stud last week, the famous racehorse and sire, Peter Pan, broke the bones in his near foreleg. The knee was encased in plaster of paris and the leg put into splints. The veterinary surgeon who attended him stated that he would remain in splints for a month or; six weeks, but he had no doubt of the bones knitting and the horse’s future as a sire would not be affected. A Big Field. No fewer than 35 nominations have' been received for the Autumn Steeplechase, of £250, to be run on the last day of the Riverton meeting. This is nearly double the list received for the Great Western Steeplechase, of £5OO. The large field engaged in the Autumn Steeplechase represents a combination of the strength engaged in the four cross-country races to be run on the first and second days of the meeting. Master Hotspur. Being off the winning list since the season of 1938-39, Master Hotspur staged a come-back at the Maniatoto meeting. It was against modest opposition, but showed that he has kept sound enough to stand racing. Master Hotspur was a briliant two-year-old. and would have been far more successful but for a tendency to get unbalanced. It was originally intended to put him to the stud, but riding over sheep country found him sound enough to return to j training. As a two-year-old Master j Hotspur won the John Grigg Stakes , and the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, ( and ran second in the Autumn Nursery • Handicap. He is a half-brother to Pre- j mature, who won on each day of the , Wellington meeting.
