WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

KOPUARANGA MEETING. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The sixth annual meeting of the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute was held in the local hall on Thursday. Mrs Jarrett welcomed the visitors and members.

The annual report and balance sheet was adopted. The president’s report slated: “I would like to thank committee- and members for their help and co-opera-tion during the year. Our thanks are due to Mesdames W. J. Cottle, R. Kenny, E. J. Wright, S. J. Clarke and Miss M. Wright for donations of trophies, and also to demonstrators and hostesses. During the year our institute has helped with a patriotic dance in May, and the Paddy’s Market, in August. Eight soldiers’ parcels have been sent, and three quilts and 179 garments forwarded to the Red Cross Society. Special thanks are due to Mrs Wright for cutting out garments and making up quilts. Delegates have attended both half-yearly council meetings. Successful “Bring and Buy” stalls have been held and demonstra- j tions of poker work and art needlework. Mrs C. C. Jackson gave a most interesting talk on wool, and displayed samples of homespun and of laminated wool. Several new books have been added to the library. Visits have been received from Mesdames Keir and Dagg and. Miss Wolters, members of the executive. In February the sixth birthday was celebrated by a plain and fancy dress dance.” Mrs Keir was appointed teller for the election of officers, but as the number nominated did not exceed the number required, no election was necessary. The following officers were declared elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs C. P. Jarrett; vice-pre-sidents, Mesdames W. J. Cottle, E. J. Wright and R. Kenny; hon secretary, Miss M. Wright; hon treasurer, Mrs Jennings; committee, Mesdames Clarke, O’Connor and Brophy; Press correspondent, Miss M. Wright; librarian, Mrs W. J. Cottle.

Mrs Jarrett was appointed delegate to the Federation meeting on April 30, and was asked to support the Upper Plain remit. It was proposed that Mr Nicholaison be asked to continue acting as auditor. Members were reminded that the results of the potato growing competition must be in next month.

A competition for best hot water bag cover resulted: —Mrs Jarreii 1, Mrs W. J. Cottle 2, Mrs Jennings 3. Afternoon tea was served, after which Mrs Dagg gave a most interesting demonstration on felt novelty work. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
