THE SHADY CORNER
TAKE IN HAND NOW. That shady, corner which never seemed worth while might be taken in hand now. Trouble must be taken in preparing shady borders; it is useless to expect any results from haphazard treatment. Certain plants do ir. shade —a fair number in fact; but first the soil must be attended to. If it is dry and ill-nourished, dig in two spits deep, incorporating plenty of manure with the bottom spit. If manure is unobtainable use decayed vegetable refuse. Campanulas in shades of mauve and white will thrive in shade and also find a spot for the Iceland poppies. Aquilegias. Solomon’s Seal and Echinops are shade-loving plants, and for early flowering plant Doronicums. If the'soil is naturally damp try some of the hardy primulas. Bold, clumps give a delightful effect.
