There was a good attendance at the League of Mothers’ monthly meeting held in St. Andrew's Hall yesterday, when the president, Mrs. R. H. Every, extended a warm welcome to Mr. S. O. English, Dominion President, who was presented with a shoulder spray. The president announced that 14 gifts of knitted comforts had been presented to soldiers at the last gathering. Mrs. Every presented Mrs. Irwin with flowers and a gift as a small token of the members appreciation of her services as accompaniste to the choir. Members passed a vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Knox Smith for their kindness in donating a platform for use at League meetings. Mrs. R. Thompson gave the “Thought,” “To live for others, to suffer for others, is the inevitable of our being. To accept the condition gladly is to find it crowned with its own joy.” “Where’er you walk” was pleasing rendered by the choir, while a duet by Mesdames Robinson and Toasby was greatly appreciated, Mrs. F. Bath being the accompaniste. 3 The secretary read a letter from Mr. / R. Brown, expressing his gratitude for the League’s gift of a knitted cardigan. An invitation from the Salvation Army was extended to League members to be present at a special meeting to be held in the King’s Theatre on April 21. In opening her address Mrs. English expressed her appreciation of the spontaneous welcome extended to her, while she congratulated the branch on its flourishing state, and on its good fortune in having such a capable president. The speaker said in her opinion the League was the most wonderful organisation in the world built up as it was upon the spiritual life of individual members. It wa!s a powerful force for peace in New Zealand, a power against evil, and by living up to its ideals members could add moral and spiritual strength to the life of the people through the Dominion. “It was an organisation for making us better wives, mothers, home makers and women of goodwill, while our aim should be to get into our meetings women who are in need of love, sympathy and understanding, and endeavour to bear one another’s burdens.” said the speaker. “Let us strive to spread throughout the Dominion this marvellous organism of ours and the ideals for which it stands; thus becoming living members of a living organism. Although we would fail in our strivings to live up to the aims of the League the desire of trying to achieve them would build up a power against evil.” The speaker emphasised the sanctity of marriage, and the responsibilities thus undertaken; there must be perfect confidence, mutual respect and preparedness to give and take, bear and forbear. In the training of children example was a great preceptor. X Truth, goodness, purity of thought and I motive should always be adhered to, .? and children taught to pray. Love, understanding and peace should be the keynote of all meetings—love meant not getting, but giving. Mrs. G. Brown thanked Mrs English on behalf of members for her instructive address. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Social Gathering.
