NIAGARA OF SUPPORT
PROMISED FROM UNITED STATES APPROPRIATION BILL PASSED. WENDELL WILLKIE TO SPEAK IN CANADA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 19. The House of Representatives passed the British Aid Appropriation Bill of 7,000, 000,000 dollars. Official figures give the vote as 337 to 55. The measure now goes to the Senate, where the Appropriations Sub-committee will begin hearings on Thursday.
The House earlier defeated by 162 votes to 63 an amendment to reduce the appropriation from 7,000,000,000 to 5,000,000,000 dollars. Mr. David Lane Powers said: “Whether we like it or not, the Lease and Lend Act is our policy. If this Bill is not passed for the total amount it will only mean another Bill later to make up the full amount.”
Senator Pepper, who is on a holiday visit to Ottawa, addressed the Canadian Club today. Senator Pepper said: “The Empire is at war and can count upon it that the people of the United States are with those who are fighting the battle for deemocracy until the end. It gives me no little satisfaction to come to you fresh from the Congress of the United States which has in a democratic way laid down the forthright policy of the peenle of the United States. “We have resolved to spare no expense and shirk no sacrifice to make our country a Niagara of support for those heroic peoples who stand today with indescribable valour in the front lines.” Mr. Wendell Willkie has accented an invitation by Mr. Mackenzie King to open a drive for 5.500.000 dollars for the Canadian auxiliary war services at a mass meeting at Toronto on Monday. Mr. Willkie will speak on his observations during his visit to London.
