BATTLE GRAY

ADOPTED FOR AMERICAN WARSHIPS ONE WAY OF SAVING TIME. IN EVENT OF TRANSFERS TO BRITAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 19. The United States Navy is painting its warships battle gray. It was learned today that as warships return to naval bases for overhaul the usual light gray is being darkened. The decision to use dark gray is in line with the policy adopted by Britain. This would save time in repainting should any American warships now in overhaul yards be turned over to Britain under the Lend and Lease programme.
