FOOD FOR FRANCE
POLICY OF THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT STATEMENT BY MR WELLES. CONSUMPTION IN OCCUPIED ZONE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright! WASHINGTON, March 17. The United States is willing to permit the shipment of specified grains to unoccupied France, with certain conditions regarding its ultimate consumption, said Mr Sumner Welles today. He added that the French Ambassador, M. Henry Haye, had requested the release of food as cargo for two French ships at present in New York. The President informed M. Haye that he was entirely willing that this request should be raised with the American Red Cross, but it was obvious that the American Government must assure itself that the final consumption of all goods sent occurred within the unoccupied zone.
FINAL CONSENT AWAITED FROM BRITAIN.
(Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) WASHINGTON. March 18. Mr. Henry Haye, after a conference with Mr. Sumner Welles, said that only the final consent of Britain remains to complete the plan for sending American food to unoccupied France.
