BATTLE FOR KEREN

♦ SUCCESSFUL BRITISH ASSAULTS HEIGHTS AND PRISONERS TAKEN. ENEMY COUNTER-ATTACKS BROKEN. A battle is raging round Keren, states the 8.8. C. The Italians, making desperate efforts to delay the fall of the town, launched a series of counter-attacks against positions recently captured by the British forces. Everywhere they were beaten off with heavy loss. Two' important heights overlooking Keren were captured by the British troops, who took 800 prisoners. The R.A.F. dive-bombed and machine-gun-ned troops and gun positions and also attacked the railway. An Italian fighter was shot down. If Keren falls, the way will be open for an attack on Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, 60 miles away.
